I try to be as informal as possible and let people pose themselves. A lot of times a family wants me to have them do something. I prefer to show who they are not what they do.

Summer nights in Rhode Island are perfect for family portraits. The light is fantastic, and usually family members are winding down from a day at the beach or some other activity. I loved this rather large family and really responded to the energy and love that was floating around. I couldn't tell who's kids belonged to who because they all just played perfectly together. 

For this, I just showed up with a my Canon 6D and a 70-200 2.8 lens. The light and setting took care of itself. The family was terrific.
