I create these portraits because of the significant impact oysters have on our environment. I believe that humans can also positively influence the world. These portraits serve as a reminder of the good that simple oysters can accomplish where they live.
Oysters can filter up to 50 gallons of water daily, enhancing water quality in their habitats. Their beds not only provide a habitat for various marine life but also reduce tidal flooding, which is increasingly crucial in urban areas. In New York City, oyster reefs are actively being utilized to help protect important ecosystems from the effects of climate change.
The presence of oysters contributes to ecological balance simply by existing. Each oyster plays a role in maintaining the health of our coastal waters, making their preservation vital for both nature and people.
